ABSTRACT

Austroasiatic group. In addition to the upland minorities (about 10 percent of the population), Chinese live mainly in the urban areas. Life expectancy is about sixty-fi ve years.

Most Viɾt are Buddhists, primarily of the Mahayana sect, but notable percentages are Chinese Buddhist-Taoist, Roman Catholic, Muslim, and Cao Đài (an indigenous religion). Vietnamese multiculturalism has resulted in a complex intertwining of musics. To date, however, most musical research has focused on the Viɾt.
