ABSTRACT

Vocabulary knowledge is among the best predictors of successfully learning to read (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NIH, DHHS, 2000). It is one of the most visible aspects of language acquisition in children. As Richgels (2004) noted “The number of words in a child’s vocabulary is an indicator of his or her linguistic health and a factor in his or her ability to use language in varied contexts and for multiple purposes” (p. 473). Acquiring the necessary vocabulary begins in the first year of life.
