ABSTRACT
The importance of vocabulary to reading achievement-and more specifically to reading comprehension-has long been established (Thorndike, 1917; Davis, 1944). Knowledge of word meanings and the ability to access that knowledge efficiently are recognized as important factors in reading and listening comprehension, especially as students progress to middle school and beyond (Chall, 1983, 1996; Marzano, 2004).
