ABSTRACT
This chapter encourages all high school teachers to take a proactive stand to improve student literacy in their classrooms, in their departments, and in their schools. The chapter examines three approaches to literacy improvement that include assessment of instructional methods, curriculum, and school climate. The chapter also considers literacy improvement at the classroom, department, and school levels. The teacher’s role is pivotal, requiring committed, persistent, and informed action.
