ABSTRACT

Questions related to positioning that the activities leader may want to ask the physical therapist (PT) include: (I) Does this patient have a subluxed shoulder joint? If so, what are the precautions? (2) Does this patient have a hand splint or other device? If so, how long should it be worn? (3) If the patient is not using a lap board, why not? Should one be obtained? Does the patient use an arm trough? Should the arm be positioned with pillows if a lap board is not being used? (4) Does the patient need a wedge between the thighs to keep the legs abducted? (5) Is the patient's arm (or leg) flaccid? Or does the patient exhibit spasticity? If so, which techniques can be used to decrease the spasticity? (6) Does the patient have any areas of skin breakdown that need particular care and attention? How can the activities leader help to prevent skin breakdown?
