ABSTRACT

Although the term “European American” is meant here to include Americans whose ancestors immigrated to the United States from a country in Europe, many European Americans would not immediately identify themselves with this label for their cultural background. Many European American clients are likely to use the expressions “American,” “Caucasian,” or possibly “Anglo American,” “Southerner,” or “White.” Some European Americans are either unaware of or do not identify with the European aspects of their culture. However, because Americans from Europe are the dominant cultural force in the United States today, it is hoped that examining the cultural background of European Americans will not only promote greater understanding of the counseling issues particular to this group of people but that it also will illuminate the extent to which counseling itself, as it has developed to date, is a Eurocentric process (Das, 1995).
