ABSTRACT

Tajfel (1981) described ethnic identity as part of an individual’s selfconcept that comes from knowledge of membership in a social group(s) and the value or emotional significance attached to that membership. Similarly, Phinney (1990) defines ethnic identity as consisting of self-identification as a group member, a sense of belonging, and one’s attitudes toward one’s group. These definitions can easily be broadened and extended to include other aspects of social status, in addition to ethnicity, such as gender, sexual orientation, or disability status, to constitute an individual’s cultural identity.
