ABSTRACT

The best-known executive branch structure is surely the White House, the official residence of the best-known U.S. government employee. But the executive branch employs five million other people as well. They work in fourteen cabinet-level departments and sixty-two independent agencies in a vast network of buildings around the world. U.S. military installations, embassies and consulates, Social Security offices, and post offices all house executive branch employees. Approximately five hundred executive branch buildings, including the headquarters of the departments and agencies, are in the Washington, D.C., area alone.
