ABSTRACT

Although in theory just another citizen, the president does not live like one. The first family occupies the White House, a fully staffed, 132-room structure that combines personal living quarters and an office complex. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., the Executive Mansion sits on an immaculate eighteen-acre estate, which is maintained by the National Park Service. Within its walls are thousands of beautiful items of furniture, art, china, and antiques, many of which are invaluable. Should the president or first lady not like the paintings on the walls, the National Gallery of Art will provide new ones.
