ABSTRACT
In addition to the fourteen cabinet departments, the executive branch includes several other kinds of agencies. Some of these agencies are independent of any cabinet department, whereas others are part of the cabinet hierarchy but have the power to operate largely as separate entities. No matter what kind of organizational relationship these agencies have to the rest of the executive branch, however, the president has direct legal responsibility for them and often exerts considerable control over them.
