ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some examples of an emerging category of research articles- mixed-methods articles. The rallying cry for most mixed-methods advocates is the notion that the research question determines the method, and not the other way around. Qualitative articles using quantitative components are much rarer. This might be due to the fact that qualitative researchers are less inclined to use quantitative methods to buttress their efforts. There are a number of possible reasons for this. On one hand, qualitative researchers might feel that it is important to expand and extend the nature of qualitative methods without “clouding the waters” with quantitative data. These researchers might also feel that nailing down aspects of the study by using quantitative methods might be premature. Finally, it might even be the case that qualitative researchers are not as comfortable using quantitative methods as quantitative researchers might be in their own use of qualitative methods.
