ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, strategies related to addressing behavior change within the context of the psychosocial issues of child overweight have been presented. This chapter describes the synthesis into practice of nutrient and energy requirements within the context of the environment while simultaneously addressing psychosocial issues. It rst discusses general dietary guidance (the U.S. Dietary Guidelines; Department of Health and Human Services, 2005) and the interpretation of this guidance into action steps (MyPyramid and the Nutrition Facts Panel on the food label). Following this is a brief overview of nutrition education, along with evaluations of current nutrition strategies to treat childhood overweight. The bulk of this chapter focuses on how those working with overweight children and their families can assist them in navigating through an environment that promotes unhealthy eating and physical inactivity. The concluding section delineates nutrition education resources readily available to health professionals, clinicians, and families.
