ABSTRACT

Few causes make people feel so desperate as the quest to rule themselves in their own country. The 1900s have seen many nationalists who felt passionate enough to turn to terrorism in their desire to be rid of a colonial power. Quite often, the violence has worked and the country has gained its independence, but only after ferocious battles of terrorism and counterterrorism. Africa had a particularly bitter struggle against its various European rulers, but there were vicious campaigns in India, southeast Asia, and parts of Europe, too.
