ABSTRACT

The site largely determines the character, quality and cost of the golf course; it can be ruined by inexperienced planning, design, or construction. Area is fundamental. Below 100 acres, length, interest, variety and safety tend to fall below desirable standards. Greater acreage gives scope for better planning, landscaping, separating holes, avoiding wet, steep or barren ground and for providing practice areas or a short relief course. Area is equally the determining factor in the benefits which additional land can bring to an existing course.
