ABSTRACT

Abiew, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, defends the emergence of the right of humanitarian intervention, and argues that state sovereignty is not incompatible with the latter. Following a review of historical precedents, Abiew concludes by assessing contemporary developments in terms of sources and support for intervention on humanitarian grounds.
