ABSTRACT

The Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture began its service in 1999 as a nongovernmental agency funded by international donations providing free mental health service to the 120,000 citizens of Ramallah and surrounding West Bank communities. The authors researched descriptive and empirical reports documenting the applicability and effectiveness of time-limited individual therapy after complicated grief, and group therapy for family members after violent death for adults and children. The group participants agreed to attend a closed, time-limited group therapy after outreach assessment established enduring and dysfunctional symptoms of trauma and grief persisting for four to 12 months after the violent death. To announce the group therapy program, media interviews (TV and radio) were offered to the participants to give them an opportunity to publicly address their traumatic experiences. Fourteen bereaved family members completed a closed, time-limited group therapy.
