ABSTRACT

I have been actively involved in addressing race and racism since 1966, when I was a sophomore in college. One of my greatest lessons during that time is that those of us who are white and, by definition, have white privilege must engage in sustained self-examination about how our race affects our lives. If we don’t fully understand our individual and collective roles in maintaining a system of white superiority,

our relationships with people of color remain superficial, our ability to function in diverse workplaces is greatly diminished, and we fail to create a just world in which everyone has an equitable opportunity to contribute and thrive.
