ABSTRACT

I sit down on a plane with a copy of Tim Wise’s book, White Like Me, in my lap. My seatmate asks what I do, and, almost begrudgingly, I tell him. Describing my work usually brings questions and arguments, passed off as those of a “devil’s advocate.” He begins: “Do you really think that there should be race-based scholarships and grants? What happens when, in all of the academic associations, there are racial-group-based caucuses-isn’t this Balkanization?” I know the challenges by heart.
