ABSTRACT

Omega Solutions LLC, located in Troy, Michigan, contracts with other companies to provide human resources services that range from payroll and tax management to benefits administration. Formerly a small firm conducting business in a regional market, Omega could rely on the entrepreneurial spirit of its employees and the leadership of its owners to attract customers, assess their needs, and provide appropriate services. Now, however, Omega has grown to become a national competitor, requiring the company to increase the size of its workforce while developing formal departments and lines of authority to coordinate the work of the larger staff. What was once handled by word-of-mouth among co-workers now requires a management hierarchy and formalized procedures. 1
