ABSTRACT

One of the earliest and longest-lasting art history textbooks is Helen Gardner’s Art Through the Ages. First published in 1926, the book follows the chronology of Western art from the prehistoric period to the 20th century. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings, plus four-color reproductions, the 506-page first edition includes a glossary of terms, bibliographies, and separate chapters on India, China, and Japan. The contemporary art section is concerned with art created from 1900 to 1925. The third edition, which was issued in 1946 shortly before Gardner’s death, has endured with revisions over the years by various art historians.
