ABSTRACT

A major theme that runs through the Pakistan social studies and history curricula, from grades 1 through 10, relates to the place of women in the social system of the country. Women are portrayed as mothers, sisters, and wives whose primary duties include childbearing, childrearing, and other household responsibilities. Their virtues include sacrifice, devotion, religiosity, and dedication to family. They exist and operate exclusively in the private domain and totally outside the ‘practical’ domains of politics and economics. Even their roles as educators are confined to the four walls of ‘home.’ In recent years, emphasis on religion and nationalism has also been added to the school texts.
