ABSTRACT

By 1937, Lucy had been married to Winthrop Rutherfurd for seventeen years. The once vibrant sportsman and golf enthusiast was now seventy-five years old and in declining health. While he had a private nurse, he required Lucy’s constant care, and she gladly gave it. No one doubted that she adored her husband and enjoyed being with him. She had even accompanied him to prizefights when they had stayed at their pied-a-terre in New York in better days when he was in better health. It was just something ladies didn’t do, but if Winty wanted her at his side she obliged, no matter what the situation. Now in failing health, he needed her more than ever.
