ABSTRACT

In Chapter 121 discussed the importance of putting a line of demarcation between your professional and your private lives as a way to manage your outer environment. In this chapter, I will talk about setting boundaries within your inner environment and learning to maintain a healthy distance between the emotional demands of your work and your personal life. When you immerse yourself, day in and day out, in the internal worlds of distressed individuals, it is bound to take a psychological toll on you (Sussman, 1995). There is a paradox in being a therapist. On the one hand, you need to be caring and empathetic for your clients; on the other hand, you must have some objectivity to be effective.
