ABSTRACT

In board rooms around the country, executive coaching has one primary meaning: coaching that increases performance and productivity. As long as corporations are steadfast in their resolve to increase productivity, performance coaching will be in vogue. Corporations increasingly expect managers to coach their employees, and presumably most of this is performance coaching. When performance coaching involves senior executives, it is called performance-based executive coaching and it is the subject of this chapter. We begin by defining and differentiating performance-focused coaching from skill-focused and developmental coaching, then review the core competencies of effective executives and the role of these competencies in performance-focused coaching. This chapter then describes the process of this type of executive coaching. The remainder of the chapter focuses on various approaches to performancefocused coaching. Three different modes of this coaching function are described and illustrated.
