ABSTRACT

The title of this chapter may strike some as odd. It may not seem unreasonable to assess an executive’s suitability for coaching. After all, not every executive who asks for or is assigned to executive coaching will profit from it. While some executives are good candidates for executive coaching, others are not. Certain executives do not profit from coaching for many reasons such as insufficient motivation or reluctance to change. However, it may not be intuitively obvious why coaches should likewise be evaluated as to their suitability for coaching specific executive clients. The fact is that some coaches not only do not help but can actually harm some clients. There is growing sentiment that assessing the suitability of both clients and coaches appears essential for achieving successful outcomes in executive coaching.
