ABSTRACT

Do you need unauthorized file-sharing to get free music? And do you need inadequate subscription services to get good music? Hardly, on both counts. Good, free, and guiltfree authorized music intersect at indie watering holes, where the unsigned musician and the adventurous listener meet for tuneful revelry. Creative artists who don’t fit the majorlabel mold, or who haven’t gotten lucky, hunger to be heard. Music-loving collectors who crave unrestricted music files, and who have tired of the big five’s refusal to meet market demand at any price, hunger for new streaming and download opportunities. This chapter points to online destinations where both sides of this musical appetite are sated.
