ABSTRACT

Stanley Resor was born in 1879 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his undergraduate degree in classics from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1901. In 1904 he began working as a salesman at Procter & Collier, the in-house advertising agency for the Procter & Gamble Company. In 1908 he and his brother Walter were hired by the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) to open a Cincinnati, Ohio, branch of the agency. In 1916 Resor and a group of associates purchased JWT, and Resor became president of the agency, a position he would retain for 39 years. The following year, 1917, he cofounded the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) and married coworker Helen Lansdowne, who would become one of the most prolific and prominent copywriters of the time. In 1955, at the age of 76, Resor became chairman of the board of JWT. He retired from JWT in 1961 and died on 29 October 1962.
