ABSTRACT
The earliest known English newspaper advertisement appeared in
Weekly Relations of Newes

; it announced to the public that back issues of the paper were for sale. As the
th century progressed, advertisements for books, coffeehouses, and patent medicines spread slowly as the population and business expanded, especially around London. Shopkeepers continued to rely largely on signs, although poster advertising was used as well.
