ABSTRACT

Thomas J. Watson, a tenacious salesman from the National Cash Register Company of New York City, joined the company as general manager and was promoted to president within

months. In his first ten years of management of C-T-R, Watson recognized the increasing opportunities in global markets and the power of the company’s tabulating machine to revolutionize business operations. Watson expanded the company globally and divested all nontabulating business. In February

the company’s name was changed to International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) to reflect its growth.
