ABSTRACT

The story of Pamela Bodajian is one of the most promising and inspiring that I heard about new approaches to community involvement. It is important both in showing the obstacles working parents face, and in demonstrating that these obstacles can be removed. If one working mother can change the relationship between paid work, family care, and community volunteerism in her life, other working parents can too. This book asks, “How can we create healthy families and caring communities?” Pam's story reveals a part of the answer—it is being constructed daily by working families themselves, who recognize that the challenge of work and family requires neighborhood connections, community resources, and collective action.
