ABSTRACT

interpreters to accommodate the heavy Asian voter turnout. During the 2001 New York City elections, numerous eligible Asian Americans lost their right to vote because of the omission of their names from the list of registered voters and improper police interference in election administration, among other issues (Magpantay, 2002). Similar problems were encountered by Vietnamese American voters in Orange County, California during the 2002 March primary election. The Los Angeles Times reported that Vietnamese-speaking voters were confused by the poor Englishto-Vietnamese translation in the sample ballot (Reyes, 2002).
