ABSTRACT
To welcome in the millennium, Wired magazine published an issue entitled “The Future Gets Fun Again.” It included a breathy article on “Newer York” by Michael McDonough [sic] (as told to Bruce Sterling).1 This was a tale of New York City in the new millennium, a story that began right in the midst of environmental meltdown. The environmental crisis (to occur in the imminent future) featured global warming that set “the new whitewash job on the Guggenheim bubbling” and produced blazes that were consuming the “drought-ridden eastern forests three feet down into the topsoil.”2
