ABSTRACT

Henry “Hank” Boles was born on February 22, 1910, in Oxford, Mississippi. His father was William Robert Boles, a cobbler, and his mother was Willa Wright Boles. He attended LeMoyne Junior College in Memphis, Tennessee, where he graduated in 1927. On August 28, 1938, he married Myrtle C.Spralley of Kansas City, Missouri, with whom he had three children, Henry Jr., Robert and Gail. After a brief stint at Crane Business College in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of twenty-nine Boles entered the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), also in Chicago, where he studied under Mies van der Rohe (18861969). Boles received his bachelor of science degree in architecture in 1943. From 1929 until the end of his undergraduate education, Boles supported himself and his family by working as a clerk for the United States Postal Service.
