ABSTRACT

The 1850 U.S. Census places Grafton Brown’s parents in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, one year before his birth, February 22, 1841.1 The census also lists his father, Thomas, as a laborer, and his mother, Wilhemina, as a homemaker. As a free man, Thomas Brown worked with the abolitionist movement in Harrisburg to help free others.
