ABSTRACT
Alma Fairfax Murray was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 9, 1927. She was the younger of two children born to Clarence Murray and Alma Pinn Murray; her sister, Madeline, was ten years older. Alma Murray’s father worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and her mother was an elementary school teacher in Alexandria and at one time operated her own nursery school in Alexandria.
