ABSTRACT

DeWitt S.Dykes Sr., before becoming an architect at age fifty-one, served as an ordained minister and administrator in the Methodist church. He was born on August 16, 1903, in Gladsden, Alabama. His parents were Henry Sanford Roland Dykes and Mary Anna Wade Dykes. Henry Dykes earned his living as a brick mason and served as a lay minister in the Methodist church. Mary Anna Dykes kept house and cared for their six children. DeWitt was the fifth of six children and second oldest son. By the early 1910s, the Dykes family had relocated to Newport, Tennessee, where DeWitt received his early education.
