ABSTRACT
William Moses Jr. was born on August 20, 1901, in Cumberland County, Virginia, one of six children of William Moses Sr. and Julia Trent Moses. His father, a Baptist minister, moved the family many times as he was growing up: to Staunton, Virginia, to Washington, D.C., to Newberry, South Carolina, to Knoxville, Tennessee, to Seguin, Texas, to New York City, and to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother was a homemaker who concentrated on raising six children.
