ABSTRACT

At the surface, Dangerous Minds and The Substitute could seem like twin films. Each is set in a high school, each focuses on a single white teacher, and each deals with “difficult,” “challenging” underclass nonwhite students. Each even has a bad guy principal who happens to be African-American. In fact, the cover to the video of The Substitute prominently features the following quotation from Sandi Davis of the Daily Oklahoman: “‘Dangerous Minds’ Meets Steven Seagal.”
