ABSTRACT

The campus of Xavier University swells with pride. One can feel it pulsating from the students to the president to faculty to administrators to staff to alumni and beyond. People come to Xavier for a reason-to be a part of the production of outstanding citizens. Xavier is an HBCU (historically black college or university). It is small and private and very much like its host city, New Orleans. New Orleans is the smallest big city that I have ever seen. Six degrees of separation are more like two and people are friendly. Consequently, word gets around fast. In an environment like this, it is difficult for any institution to be isolated. The community activists could be good friends or relatives of the leaders of many of the major institutions in the city. Yes, Xavier is the place students can attend to launch successful professional careers, but they can’t ignore New Orleans, even if they are from very far away.
