ABSTRACT
Among ascetics in the early Syrian church, Luke’s gospel was favored for its encouragement of their choice of life.1 Their appreciation was particularly due to the fact that this gospel took a critical stance on marriage and also attested that the unmarried children of God are “isangelloi” like angels, and thus share in the “angelikos bios.”2
