ABSTRACT
The Gospel of John has never been a focal point of research on early Christian asceticism. There are good reasons for this, as we shall see, yet there are also points at which John’s interests and those of the ascetics do at least run parallel. Before I enter into this analysis in detail, let me make some preliminary observations about asceticism, my own relationship to it, and the Gospel of John.
