ABSTRACT

Dr. Ken Schuit was an enormously popular and accomplished medical school professor at the largest liver transplant center in the world. He died of liver failure. To the shock and surprise of his colleagues and friends, he refused to undergo a liver transplant. He knew he was going to die yet refused even to speak to the transplant surgeons. Instead, he slipped into hepatic coma and died after a brief illness. His refusal to undergo a liver transplant was something of a mystery. What was he trying to say?
