ABSTRACT
Calixto is very interested in democratizing global communication, “A North American in Bolivia sends a cable in English to New York,” he complained, “where it is translated and returns to Latin American newspapers because they subscribe to AP, UPI5 and/or Reuters for their news,” This forces Latin Americans to see their situations “through North American eyes,” argues Calixto. It is his intention, and that of his organization, to reverse that trend. Calixto sees his organization as an alternative to the U.S. and European transnationals that currently dominate the international news communication system.
