ABSTRACT

Michael J. Brown, executive director of the Jewish Organizing Initiative and author of the 2007 book, Building Powerful Community Organizations: A Personal Guide to Creating Groups That Can Solve Problems and Change the World, describes community organizing as building the power of a group to change the world. This chapter is about creating effective teams of volunteers and partners in social entrepreneurship. Volunteer groups are especially difficult to lead and manage. Here we address the components of a high-performing volunteer team, leadership challenges, and ways of dealing with difficult people.
