Family members were role models for social activism-his grandfather a union organizer in the garment industry and his mother a civil rights demonstrator. After graduating from Middlebury College, his first job was as account executive with AT&T. Several years after starting his career, his sister, who was just 20, passed away of a brain aneurysm.
