Executive compensation research has a long tradition. Indeed, top management pay issues have attracted both researchers and popular press for at least 80 years (e.g. Taussig and Baker, 1925) and have generated an enduring debate across different fields (Barkema and Gomez-Mejia, 1998; Gomez-Mejia and Wiseman, 1997; Werner and Ward, 2004).
