ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the main international organizations involved in humanitarian aid. Specifically, we will look at the more important parts of the UN Secretariat, at the relevant UN agencies and the moves they are making to reform the way they and their donor community works, and at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, an important player which sits somewhere between being an NGO and a governmental organization. We will also take a brief look at the various systems which have come into existence to monitor and track humanitarian aid. Finally, we will look at the international food aid system, a key and controversial component of the aid world.
