ABSTRACT
In the secular culture of the twenty-fi rst century, the word “nun” brings to mind a cloistered woman in prayer, a strict elementary-school teacher (perhaps wielding a ruler), or an old woman (like Mother Theresa) engaged in charitable work. All of these women, in current popular perception, are virgins.
