Prologue: the arc of the Japanese economy For 150 years, the Japanese economy followed the arc traced by a ballistic trajectory: an economy blasted from the muzzle of a Meiji-era cannon, an arc characterized by increasing, and then falling, economic growth, development and government intervention in the economy.
