Any newcomer to the study of gemmology might reasonably assume that manmade improvement of a gemstone’s appearance is rooted in our present-day hitech society. Although many of the more sophisticated treatments used to enhance the colour and value of gemstones have been developed comparatively recently, the artificial improvement of gem materials began a very long time ago.
